Jacksonville Cosmetic Surgeon – Jacksonville Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is an elective cosmetic surgical procedure designed to decrease the size of a woman’s labia and improve the overall appearance of the vagina and vulva. With increasing popularity in recent years, this type of procedure is often combined with a vaginoplasty and hoodectomy, in which the vagina is tightened and the clitoral hooding is removed to make it more prominent. This field of vaginal cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular with widespread acceptance as women choose to take control of their sexual appearance and satisfaction.
Patients opting for labiaplasty may choose to do so for aesthetic or medical reasons. Cosmetic beautification of the vagina is strictly a personal choice and may affect self-image or self-esteem in a manner similar to nose jobs, tummy tucks, and breast enhancement. Women vary in their self-image and their capacity for or interest in aesthetic improvement. Some seek to please a sexual partner or would simply like to restore their vagina to the way it looked before she had children.
Medical reasons for choosing labiaplasty may include congenitally large labia that irritate the vagina or vulva. Some women are born with abnormally large labia and find it to be uncomfortable or downright painful when wearing certain articles of clothing or attempting to engage in certain physical activities. These women find immense relief in labiaplasty that reduces the size of their vulva and virtually eliminates their pain and discomfort.
Labiaplasty surgery involves a general procedure that is similar to many other cosmetic operations. Patients are put to sleep with general anesthesia and a number of small incisions are made in the area to firm and tighten the skin folds. Excess tissue is removed and sutures are placed to keep the labia in their new location. During recovery, a certain amount of pain and swelling will occur. Other common side effects include excessive swelling, bleeding, hematoma or seroma formation, negative reaction to anesthesia, infection, wound dehiscence, extended scarring or delayed healing. Be sure to report any increase in pain, swelling or inflammation to your surgeon. These can be signs of infection and need to be treated immediately with a course of antibiotics.
